Digg this! Creating a powerful Digg account

After the birth of social media the internet has turned out work like a democracy, because its the common surfers who decide what goes popular and what should be eliminated. And like any other politician, the powerful are those who get the power of the common people. Thats the same principle on which Digg works. Almost all bloggers actively submit their content to Digg, but less than 10% have success and almost all of them don’t get more than one digg, which is from the submitter.

There are many more people who successfully get every submission to go popular, these guys don’t have any sort proxy accounts and don’t use any sort of exchange systems. All they have is a highly influential and powerful Digg account, which comes through months of hard work, selflessness and a bit of luck. I myself don’t have a good Digg account, but I’ve managed to compile everything required to develop your Digg account,

Create a Digg account

I can already hear the comments say “Why the hell is he planning to teach us such stuff”, well I must say that it isn’t that simple, there are a couple of things related to your username which play an important role on your influence. The first thing I can say is choose a catchy and memorable username and try to avoid putting your own name or your blogs name.

If you see the list of the top hundred Digg users, other than some celebrities or well known ones, the most common thing you’d see is that most of them have a pretty unusually cool name. This may not sound pretty important, but trust me it has got atleast some potential to reach the top digger level.
Set up your profile

After you create your account the first thing to do is to fill up your profile with your information. Make sure you upload a picture of yours as an avatar and sparkling eye catchy avatars are recommended. Now for your bio be very clear about yourself and about your interests, because that reveals the type of content you’ll be submitting, after that give instant messaging and contact information.
Digg also allows you to link towards your blog and other social media services you use, so I feel that you should make the maximum use of this and I believe that creating an effective social media campaign should start with inter-connecting your presence on the web. Try to make whatever you write very casual and a bit of humor is always appreciated.
Become an active Digger

Now that you’ve optimized your profile its time to give it some exposure and the best way to do so is become an active digger. An active digger is who submits good quality articles and diggs on others submissions and also leaves resourceful comments, in other words an active digger is someone who contributes to the community and avoids self promotion (Atleast for sometime :) ).
Initially its recommended that you spend upto 2 hours a day on Digg and when you feel that you’ve got the power you need, you can slowly reduce the time spent on it. Its recommend that you follow this for 3 months and then I’m sure you’ll build a good reputation.
Comment on upcoming articles – your first step towards exposure

This is a very resourceful and the easiest tip, but has the power to generate tons of exposure if do it well and have a bit of luck. I have got most of my fans on Digg through this method. All I do is surf through the articles on the upcoming list and comment on some of the articles which I feel is interesting or related to my niche. I make sure that the comments I post are very resourceful and it should successfully grab others attention and usually I get up to 3 to 4 replies from other users.
My trick is to disagree with the particular post and argue towards a point, this usually brings in a lot of replies and helps me grab a lot of attention. Its appreciated if you be a bit casual and humorous, but make sure that you also succeed in proving your point.
Build your friends network

Once you actively start implementing the above two steps, you’ll immediately start witnessing an increasing fan base who are all interested in your submissions and diggs, so if you keep on with it your sure to find huge number fans. Just after creating a Digg account its recommend that you integrate it with your Facebook account, this way you’ll also expose your Digg activities to your Facebook friends and also get in touch with your Facebook friends on Digg.
The friends you build by actively using Digg wont be very powerful unless your active only on the sites that are related to your niche, so for this reason I’d recommend that you leverage your sites readers and connections on other social sites towards your Digg account, so that some of your friends are not interested in your submissions, but also in your sites content.
Another way to build a friend base of those who are interested in your niche is to friend others who are active and submit content somewhat related to your niche. This works because many Digg users follow their fans back to become mutual friends, after this make sure that you constantly digg their submissions orelse they may un-friend you.
Exchange diggs – help others and ask for return favors

Your not one of the only ones who is working his/her ass off promoting his site on Digg, their are millions of users looking for ways to successfully self promote themselves on Digg. Almost all of them are in search of ways to co-ordinate with others to find mutual success, and this will be a golden opportunity for you to promote your blog on Digg.
Finding such people and building your network isn’t very easy, but I’m sure 3 to4 people will be available with a few searches, that is if you know where all to search. The best place to find will be forums and exchange sites, you can contact them through IMs or on any social networking site. Some people also put messages on their bio on Digg informing people that they are available for a joint co-ordination.
Starting self-promotion – a word of caution

Now when you’ve repeatedly done all the previous steps and find that your submissions are getting responses from the Digg community, I think its time that you start submitting your own blog posts to Digg. Make sure that you don’t submit more than two articles everyday, or else many of your friends may stop supporting you and if come under Digg’s scanner your sure to face a suspension.
Magnetic headlines – the first step to optimize your content

One of the things that you commonly see in most of the popular Digg submissions is that title of the article will be extraordinarily attractive. For this you’ll need to put your creativity to the test, think of something innovative or surf through Digg to find out such titles. The key here is to make short but interesting titles, the task which i have succeeded in doing :) , but post titles on my blog are not purely mine, so you see you don’t have to be totally unique, just 25% is enough.
I guess most of you have noticed the title of this post, which starts off with ‘Digg this!’, by putting this I don’t expect to go on to the homepage of Digg, but after I create a powerful Digg account I’m sure this will be beneficial.
Creating digg friendly content

I don’t mean to tell you on what niche to write, because I believe that Digg is a place where all types of content get importance, all I mean here is tell you the type of posts to write. Traditionally only controversial posts make it to the homepage, but recently the changes made by Digg allows any type of post to make it on the front page. Some of the posts which work the best are lists, stats and news related posts.
One thing you should remember is that Digg users are not interested in How to’s or guides, they are looking for entertainment and news, so after you have a powerful account, your next objective is to create such content. I don’t recommend that you change your and niche just to gain more exposure on Digg, its best if try to blend the same how to post or guide into something entertaining.
On to our readers

This happens to be the second on success with Digg and like the previous one I also hope that you’ll like this one. Digg unlike Stumbleupon cannot generate any traffic with just a few positive ratings, but once you tap into its audience you’ll have free flow of traffic.
I myself am looking for more people to connect on Digg, so if your willing to have me as your friend you can visit my profile and add me as one, I’m sure I’ll help promote all of your articles, with some in return of course :) .

Great post – and really helpful in getting to grips with Digg. I see the biggest problem is that far too many people are trying to use Digg (& Stumble Upon etc etc) for their own promotional purposes rather than the real reason they came about.

You ( I man “one” not you personally!) need to change your mindset from “what can I get out of this” to “what I can give to the community”. When you start doing the latter you should see some change in results.

    Hi Vishal :)
I think even the time you submit your posts also matters , because its of no use when you submit your posts when there are no people surfing it ;) . The best time to submit posts is at the afternoon in US time , when it comes to India , it is during midnight. :)

    • Well not in the case Digg Sunil, it is true when it comes to Twitter, but you see in Digg if anyone had to be your audience or Digger it would anytime. Timing is not necessary in Digg. Anyhow thanks for commenting

  9. Pretty nice post. I just stumbled upon your blog and wanted to say that I have really enjoyed browsing your blog posts. In any case I’ll be subscribing to your feed and I hope you write again soon!

    • Okay now I agree!! The promotions are higher than the competition during midnights (i.e India). This method will work really well once you have created a good Digg account, but still there is one problem, all my Digg friends are Indians so none of them will be active at that time to promote my article to the potential audience on Digg, so if I submit it midnight it would reach other users outside my network only when my friends are active that is sometime in the evening.

Thanks for your opinion dude, its appreciated. I’ll be writing more on this topic and I’ll cover this part too, I’m sure to give you some credit :) .
